Several area schools are included on the Indiana Department of Education’s list of 2010-2011 Four Star Schools released this week.

Of 1,780 public schools in the state, 162 earned the title. Eleven of 238 non-public schools also were named this year.

Area schools honored were:

– Bremen Senior High School;

– New Prairie United School Corp.’s Prairie View Elementary School and Rolling Prairie Elementary School;

– Penn-Harris-Madison School Corp.’s Discovery Middle School, Horizon Elementary School, Madison Elementary School, Northpoint Elementary School, Prairie Vista Elementary School and Schmucker Middle School;

– School City of Mishawaka’s Twin Branch Elementary School;

– South Bend Community School Corp.’s Hamilton Traditional School, Kennedy Primary Academy and LaSalle Intermediate Academy;

– St. Joseph Catholic Grade School in South Bend.

To be considered a Four Star School, End of Course Assessment passing percentages must fall into the top 25th percentile when compared to schools statewide. A school must also have made Adequate Yearly Progress under the federal No Child Left Behind Act to qualify.

The IDOE reviewed data for non-public schools and included the top non-public schools as honorees. Public schools and non-public schools had separate cut scores and were compared only to like schools.

This means public schools were only compared to other public schools, and non-public schools were only compared to other non-public schools. The calculations were completely independent of one another.
